Frequently Asked Questions
01What is the 501st Legion?▾
Since 1997, the 501st Legion has spread the magic of Star Wars worldwide through authentic costumes and has become the leading force in fan-based charity events. Also known as "Vader's Fist," the 501st is dedicated to brightening the lives of those less fortunate.
02Where did the 501st name come from?▾
Legion Founder Albin Johnson (TK-210) chose the name in 1997 to represent a fictional unit of Imperial Stormtroopers. Author Timothy Zahn, with Lucasfilm's approval, honored the organization by incorporating the name into his Star Wars novel Survivor's Quest in 2004. Since then, the 501st name has appeared in official Star Wars books, toys, and video games.
03Who are the Rancor Raiders specifically?▾
The Rancor Raiders are the Mississippi Garrison of the 501st Legion — officially established as a garrison on December 1, 2009. We serve Mississippi statewide and the surrounding region, appearing at charity events, conventions, hospital visits, and community appearances. Our official military designation is the 177th Armored CAV Regiment.
04Does the 501st charge for appearances?▾
No. The 501st does not charge a fee for public or private appearances. We enthusiastically welcome donations to your favorite charity in the name of the 501st Legion. If you don't have a charity in mind, we can suggest causes such as Make-A-Wish and the Starlight Starbright Children's Foundation.
05How do I request an appearance?▾
Use the official 501st appearance request form at 501st.com/request/ — or contact the Rancor Raiders directly through this website. We review all requests and do our best to accommodate events that align with our mission.
06Is the 501st part of Lucasfilm or Disney?▾
While the 501st is recognized through the inclusion of its name in official Star Wars material, it is not affiliated with Lucasfilm or Disney, nor do we rely on them for bookings, event coordination, compensation, or costumes. The 501st Legion is a volunteer fan organization.
07How can I join the Rancor Raiders?▾
Do you have a passion for Star Wars and helping others? Do you own (or are building) a professional-quality costume based on Imperial or "dark side" characters from Star Wars? Are you at least 18 years old? If yes, visit 501st.com to learn about costume approval requirements, then reach out to the Rancor Raiders to connect with the garrison.
08Where do you get those costumes?▾
Our costumes are the result of careful research, fabrication, and a lot of hard work. The majority of components are hand-built and assembled in members' spare time. The 501st Legion does not provide or manufacture costumes for purchase.
09Why are the Rancor Raiders' colors green and black?▾
Green was one of the few colors not heavily used by other 501st garrisons. Founder Brian "Vex" McClure wanted something with a military character — a deep forest green, not bright. Black accents it naturally and together they form the garrison's guidon, modeled after US Cavalry tradition. It also reflects the garrison's CAV (Cavalry) heritage through the TIE Mauler.
10What does "Death Before Dismount" mean?▾
It's the official Rancor Raiders battle cry. In cavalry tradition, you don't leave your vehicle. For the Rancors, it means you never give up the Mauler — and by extension, you never quit, you never abandon your fellow troopers, and you honor the garrison's core values of honor, duty, and integrity.
11What is Trinitite Squad?▾
Trinitite Squad is the Rancor Raiders' central Mississippi squad, serving the Jackson, Vicksburg, and Meridian areas. It's named for Trinitite — the material left on the surface of Mandalore after it was glassed by the Empire. Like the Mandalorian remnants who held to their traditions and carried on, Trinitite Squad represents the members who build something from nothing and hold the line.
12Is it hot in those costumes?▾
Like the surface of Tatooine in summertime. In Mississippi.
